General Questions About Acupuncture & TCM
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that involves inserting ultra-fine needles at specific points on the body to stimulate healing and restore balance. It works by regulating the body's energy flow (Qi), promoting blood circulation, reducing inflammation, balancing hormones, and triggering the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals. Modern research shows acupuncture affects the nervous system, immune system, and hormonal regulation, making it effective for pain management, fertility support, stress reduction, digestive health, and many other conditions.
What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine uses natural plant-based (and some mineral or animal-derived) substances to treat illness and promote health. Herbs are combined in customized formulas based on your unique TCM diagnosis and health pattern. Unlike Western pharmaceuticals that target single symptoms, Chinese herbs work synergistically to address root causes while minimizing side effects. Herbs can be prescribed as raw herbs for decoction (tea), concentrated powders, pills/capsules, or liquid tinctures. We source high-quality, tested herbs from reputable suppliers and create personalized formulas for each patient.
What is the difference between R.Ac and R.TCMP?
R.Ac (Registered Acupuncturist) and R.TCMP (Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner) are both regulated healthcare professionals in Ontario. R.TCMPs have completed more extensive training (typically 4+ years) covering acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, TCM diagnosis, dietary therapy, and other modalities. R.Acs focus specifically on acupuncture (2-3 years training). Both are registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO). R.TCMPs can prescribe Chinese herbs in addition to performing acupuncture, offering more comprehensive treatment options.
Treatment Experience & Safety
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people find acupuncture surprisingly comfortable. The needles used are extremely thin (about the width of a hair) and cause minimal to no discomfort. You may feel a slight sensation when the needle is inserted, described as a dull ache, tingling, or warmth—this is actually a positive sign that Qi is being activated. Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment. If you do experience any discomfort, we can immediately adjust the treatment.
What should I expect during my first acupuncture visit?
Your first visit typically lasts 60-90 minutes and includes:
- Comprehensive health intake discussing your main concerns, medical history, lifestyle, and health goals
- TCM diagnosis using tongue and pulse examination
- Personalized treatment plan explaining what we'll address and expected timeline
- Your first acupuncture treatment (30-40 minutes) with fine needles inserted at specific points
- Additional recommendations for herbs, diet, or lifestyle modifications if appropriate
Most patients feel relaxed during and after their first treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment frequency depends on your condition, its severity, and how long you've had it. Acute conditions may respond in 3-6 treatments, while chronic conditions typically require 8-12 sessions to see significant improvement. Most patients start with 1-2 treatments per week for the first 4-6 weeks, then reduce frequency as symptoms improve. We'll assess your progress regularly and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. For preventive care and wellness maintenance, monthly sessions are often recommended.
Are there any side effects of acupuncture?
Acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by licensed practitioners. Side effects are rare and mild, and may include:
- Temporary soreness at needle sites
- Minor bruising (uncommon)
- Temporary fatigue or drowsiness after treatment
- Temporary symptom intensification (healing response)
Serious complications are extremely rare with proper technique and sterile needles. We use single-use, disposable needles and follow strict safety protocols. The benefits far outweigh the minimal risks for the vast majority of patients.
How should I prepare for my acupuncture appointment?
To get the most from your acupuncture treatment:
- Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before (don't come on an empty stomach)
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to arms and legs
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine before treatment
- Arrive a few minutes early to relax and complete any paperwork
- Bring a list of current medications and supplements
- Come with questions—we want to address all your concerns
After treatment, plan for some relaxation time rather than strenuous activities, stay hydrated, and pay attention to how you feel over the next 24-48 hours.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy when performed by experienced practitioners trained in prenatal care. In fact, acupuncture can help with many pregnancy-related concerns including morning sickness, fatigue, back pain, anxiety, breech presentation, and labor preparation. Certain acupuncture points are avoided during pregnancy, and treatment is modified based on trimester. We have extensive experience treating pregnant women and can safely support you throughout your pregnancy journey. Always inform your practitioner if you are or might be pregnant.
Can children receive acupuncture?
Yes, acupuncture is safe and effective for children. Pediatric acupuncture uses gentler techniques, fewer needles, and shorter treatment times compared to adult treatments. For very young children or those afraid of needles, we can use non-needle techniques like acupressure, tuina (massage), or laser acupuncture. Children often respond more quickly to treatment than adults. Acupuncture can help with allergies, asthma, digestive issues, sleep problems, ADHD, anxiety, and growing pains. Parents typically stay in the room during pediatric treatments.
Can I combine acupuncture with Western medical treatment?
Absolutely! Acupuncture and TCM work excellently alongside conventional Western medicine. Many patients use acupuncture to enhance medical treatments, reduce medication side effects, support recovery from surgery or illness, and improve overall treatment outcomes. We encourage open communication with your medical doctors and are happy to coordinate care. Always inform both your doctor and TCM practitioner about all treatments you're receiving. This integrative approach often provides the best results for complex or chronic conditions.

Yes, acupuncture has extensive research supporting its effectiveness for fertility. It helps by regulating hormones, improving blood flow to reproductive organs, enhancing egg quality, thickening the uterine lining, reducing stress, and supporting overall reproductive health. For IVF patients, acupuncture can improve implantation rates, reduce side effects of medications, and increase pregnancy success rates. We recommend starting treatment 3-4 months before conception or IVF for optimal results, though starting at any point can be beneficial.
